Sprigle, PhD, PT Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access, College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, USA ABSTRACT User input is an important component to help guide designers in producing a more usable product. Evaluation of prototypes is one method of obtaining this input, but methods for evaluating assistive technology prototypes during design have not been adequately described or evaluated. This project aimed to compare different methods of evaluating prototypes to determine which hold promise as aids to designing new assistive technology products. Eight teams were recruited to independently design a working prototype of an assistive device. Twenty potential users were recruited to evaluate each of the devices by using the device to perform a task, completing an evaluation survey, answering a single overall opinion question, and by ranking the devices. The results indicate that a short evaluation survey may be a useful tool to help designers engage users during the design process.

Your users can ́t talk! How can you tell they liked your system?
Assistive technology suitability is extremely dependent on users and their needs. We understand that assistive technology and computer assisted therapy applications, in order to evolve from a stage of prototypes to commercial products, need to be evaluated with users. However, if users are unable to express their opinion, many usability evaluation methods cannot be applied. Our experience with ...

This paper describes a study of a three-dimensional virtual prototype intended for usability testing and concept validation over the internet. A virtual reality modeling language (VRML)-model of a fictive mobile phone concept with simulated interaction functionality was tested for usability following two approaches. The first group performed a traditional task-based usability test, the other pe...

Many characteristics of a product are evaluated during the development phase, such as function, aesthetics and manufacturing. The conception phase is supported by drawings and computer graphics, followed by physical prototypes that help evaluating the product features. The augmented reality technology has a great potential to assist the designers in this phase, reducing the development process ...

When designing robotic systems for the disabled, it is necessary to demonstrate that the systems are safe. Beyond safety, it must also be shown that the equipment improves the quality of life for its user. This paper discusses methods for testing assistive robotic systems to assure safety, usability and usefulness. An example of a user test designed for a robotic wheelchair is presented and dis...
